It's all in the small things....
Here's a journal entry from my second day in Varsak (the village I live in just outside of Antalya)
"There are lots of little things that are different here. I want to record my first observations before they all fade away into normalicy. First, the kitchen counters are all marble- it's a common natural resource here. The sinks form a small perfect circular basin- they are actually cute if sinks could be called that. The water here is drinkable but rich with natural minerals so we use a filter for most water . Another funny thing is the stairs in our apt. They are not measured so you feel all jumbled up when you go down them because the distance btwn each one is different ; ) I like it though.. because most things are too predictable in life.. they keep you on your toes. The light switches are outside of the bathrooms but inside all the other rooms in the house : ) On the bottom floor you'll find the living room, kitchen, entry-way, squatty potty, refrigerator nook and the back veranda that is encased with grape vines. The second floor has 2 bedrooms, and office, and a bathroom. You look around for the stairs and when nothing can be found you curiously open what looks like a linen closet and surprise! the stairs continue up in their unmeasured manor to the top floor which is where my little room is found. My room is in the corner and it's spacious and simple with a firm bed and large windows that stretch from the ceiling to the floor. The curtains cast a bright glow on the walls of my room when the sun comes through in the morning. My housemates Jamie and Rachel are treasures I think. Jaime is kind, humble, caring, and beautiful. She loves coffee and Starbucks but most of all... people and God's love. One thing that amazes me about her is that she consistently puts others before herself forward as a servant without contempt. She is a photographer and is amazing at capturing the little details that make life beautiful. Rachel is funny, loves life, is from the south and has a huge faith in Jesus. She thinks on her feet, shows her love through touch, sings her heart out and is always there to encourage and lift a friend up. Rachel is also a teacher and will leave large shoes to fill (but don't worry- she doesn't have big feet).
Also, they grow both madarines and pomegranates in the same orchards together and the ice cream is sticky here. The grapes here are great! They are more like the ones grown from a garden at home. They are smaller and vary in size and have a softer more supple skin... they are a light green- yellow shade. I love grapes...."
